Old Joe's Kaia is a plant-based guest house in the Schoemanskloof Valley, Mpumalanga — near Nelspruit (Mbombela) and perfectly placed for the Panorama Route, Kruger National Park, and Blyde River Canyon. We offer two styles of accommodation, each with its own character but sharing the same unhurried spirit. Whether you choose a freestanding rondavel or one of our kaia rooms, you'll wake to birdsong, not alarms — and to the smell of something good coming from The Seedling Kitchen.
All rooms include fresh linen, organic toiletries, and cruelty-free amenities. Self-catering facilities are available, or you can add a plant-based breakfast to your stay.
The Rondavels
Three circular, thatched-roof units set apart from the main building, each with its own entrance and private outdoor space. Built in the traditional Southern African style, the rondavels are cool in summer, warm in winter, and quiet all year round.

The Kaia Rooms
Five semi-detached rooms in the main kaia building, sharing a covered verandah that looks out over the garden and the valley beyond. These rooms are closer to the kitchen, the library, and the heart of the property — ideal if you want to be near the action without being in it.

What to expect
No TVs
Rooms are screen-free by design. Reconnect with the people and the place around you.
Wi-Fi in main building
Check in online if you need to — then step away. The garden doesn't have a password.
Pet-friendly property
Four resident cats and a dog call Old Joe's home. Your well-behaved pets are welcome too.
Swimming pool
A garden pool for cooling off after a walk through the trees or a morning on the verandah.

A plant-based breakfast can be added to your stay. Think freshly baked bread, seasonal fruit, homemade preserves, and something warm from the stove.
Self-catering
Facilities are available for guests who prefer to prepare their own meals. Nelspruit (Mbombela) is a 30-minute drive for supplies.

We're on the N4 in the Schoemanskloof Valley, between Nelspruit and Waterval Boven. Please use our directions — GPS can send you the wrong way.
